The Leading Rune

The Rune of Tyr is a spear. This is appropriate. Throughout history, the most common weapon of the soldier has been the spear. Call it a pike, a spear or lance, and it is essentially the same weapon: a blade on a pole. The spear still exists as the bayonet on a rifle.

A person can learn to wield a spear in a few hours. Of course, true expertise comes with years of practice and experience. Nonetheless, the spear is a powerful, versatile weapon.

The spear is a weapon of teamwork. Be it a shield wall, pike formation or phalanx, the massed body of spearmen work as a team. They are mutually supportive. This is not a mere collection of individuals, but a trained team who know how to work as a group toward a single purpose.

Wars are not won by individual heroes attempting fantastic feats. Wars are won by teams of soldiers working together, doing as they were trained. Heroes have their place, but the bulk of victory is the team effort. Facing danger, whether as a team or alone, is a heroic effort.

The wise use of teams requires leadership skills, strategic thinking and tactical ability. A team needs a leader to direct its efforts. A leader needs to know how to lead, plan, and think “on his feet.” On the other hand, team members need to know how to implement the leader’s directions. The team needs to know how to respond and take action.
