Heathen Freedom
The minute I took up Heathenism, I was free of any sense of spiritual debt. There is no obligation incurred because of past misdeeds. There is no stigma of innate unworthiness, be it original sin or karmic debt. Heathenism incurs no debt. The Gods do not demand anything. If I honor them, I do so because I mean it.
With there being no debt, anything I give the Gods is given freely. Anything I choose to do for another person is also freely given. I am free to give or to withhold. Therefore, any giving is a true gift rather than paying off a religious obligation.
In so many spiritual paths, the idea of obligation waxes strong. One feels as if there is someone with his hand out at every twist and turn. The price may be charity or penance or guilt. That does not exist in Heathenism. Our way is the way of freedom. We are free from burdens. We are free to live. Our freedom means our gifts are true expressions of generosity.
