Getting Help
Every couple of years, it is time to get new eyeglasses. I hate to admit that I cannot see things clearly without the help of glasses. Glasses enable me to read, for one thing. Without them I would have to hold anything I read at arm’s length. Eyeglasses are not my only “helpers.” I also take medication for my heart, thanks to a heart attack a few years ago. I do not like the idea that I need help to stay healthy.
Self reliance is wonderful, but we need to remember that there are times we have to accept help. None of us can do everything alone. Just as eyeglasses and medicines are a help, so we can avail ourselves of the help of others. Likewise, we ought to be willing to help our friends and relatives when they need it. Asking for assistance does not make us any less self-reliant. It only means that we have the good sense to get help when we need it.
A wise men knows when to go it alone and when to get assistance. Many hands lighten the load.
