Horse Sense

Imagine if we gave an average fellow an untrained thoroughbred horse, and we asked him to train it for a race. Without the right knowledge or experience, he would have a tough time just getting the horse to carry a rider. The thoroughbred might be look like a fine example of a racing horse, but its performance would be awful.

Now let us take the horse away from the average fellow and put him in the hands of an expert trainer. Retraining would be more difficult that with an untrained horse. The trainer would have to “train out” the bad training while at the same time instilling good training. Progress would be delayed. However, once the bad training was overcome, the thoroughbred could be brought to his full potential as a racing horse.

There is some irony that the horse can be a symbol of our subconscious. Our habitual actions, thoughts and attitudes are implanted in the subconscious. This is why it is so hard to change from bad habits to good ones. We must first “train out” the bad patterns so we may replace them by “training in” the good ones. It takes persistent, conscious effort to develop the kind of good habits that lead to a better lifestyle.

Heathens who come over from other faiths take time to break the old religious habits. Likewise, folks making the move from a bad lifestyle such as poverty to a good one such as prosperity take time to make the jump. Old failure habits must be rooted out and replaced with healthy ones. Part of the work takes time. The results of these efforts is well worth every moment.
