Feeling the Sig Rune

The following exercises will help you get a feeling of the Sig Rune. Enjoy them!

Exercise 1: The nature of Sig is constant. It is unchanging. This kind of constancy manifests many ways in our lives. There is a brilliance to it that adds a pleasant light to its changeless nature. Consider the constant things in your life that you find beneficial. Especially ponder those things that have remained constant and given you an advantage. There you find a connection with the Sig principle. I have found it wise to spend a half hour listing such things, then putting the list away for a few hours. Come back and look at it later with “fresh eyes”, so to speak. You might discover a pleasant surprise.

Exercise 2: Sig is such total victory that all melts away before it. It is timely that we have just had several ice storms in the US. The storms have caused accidents, deaths and property damage, not to mention discomfort. Sig as the summer Sun is free of these dangers. The very things that cause fear and damage in winter are nonexistent in Summer. Consider for yourself the problems winter causes you. Write them down, if you wish. Here is your own example where the Sig energy, represented by the Summer sun, takes seasonal dangers and renders them inert. Your own experience provides another connection with the Sig Rune energy.

I realize that it is Summer in Australia and New Zealand. You can adapt the exercise to meet your needs.

Alternate Exercises: The light of Sig can brighten. It can also burn out the one who basks in it too long. Consider instances when you basked in the warmth of the Sun. Think of the feeling of warm, friendly sunlight. If you are in a warmer climate, you can enjoy feeling the Sun’s rays. (It is so cold here in the Northeast right now that you could not feel it if you tried!)

Now consider the other side of it. Think back to a time when you were sunburnt. The same Sun that bathes you in friendly warmth can burn you. It is a great pain and discomfort to be sunburnt. The same Sun that is good can be harmful, just as the Runic power can be helpful or destructive. The thing about Sig is a matter of proportion.

Consider famous people who shined bright, only to burn out quickly. They made an impression, but their tenure was cut short by their own intensity. Those people are a further example of the difference between Sig as rise and downfall.

Remember Daedelus?

Alternate Exercises: Sig is the overwhelming Victory, (Tyr is the victory that requires a fight.) In a Sig type victory, it is as if the opposition came to be stomped into defeat. The upset is totally overwhelming. Can you think of instances where you came ahead in a situation just by showing up? Have you ever defeated someone in a competition, sport or battle so easily that you felt like you won by default? That is the Sig victory. The winner so totally outclasses the loser that the victory is virtually painless to the victor. Have you ever won so thoroughly? If so, your victory was an example of Sig in action. The loser is like the snows of winter which cannot withstand the Sun’s warmth in Spring.

If you enjoy military history, look at battles that were woefully lopsided. The victors totally outclassed the enemy and won hands-down, with few losses. The first Gulf War comes to mind immediately. Another might be the Battle of New Orleans, where the British were mauled badly while the Americans had very few casualties. For British readers, the British victories over Italian forces in North Africa prior to the Afrika Korps make good example, as do some of the 19th Century colonial campaigns. All Heathens can ponder the horrific defeat which Hermann the Cheruscan visited on the Romans, who deserved it. The point is to look at battles which show a lopsided victory. That is a military example of Sig.
