Me, We and You

One of the problems of these times is the emphasis on the individual to an extent that virtually ignores the group. In other words, people are so into ME that they forget about WE. The good of the individual must take into account the good of the many. Life is a balance of ME and WE.

The reason I do this daily exercise and Uncle Thor’s Magazine Online is that responsibility landed on me, so to speak. As one of the voices of Heathenism back in the 1990s, I have become something of an elder to the wider Heathen community. This was not my plan. Nonetheless, it has become my place. Therefore, the WE side of the equation gets a lot of consideration from me.

One of my concerns is setting an example for the younger people. A few of you may remember that back in the 1990s, I was a lot more volatile and mischievous. At that time, most of us did not think of the future. We were so busy doing our thing that we lost sight of the impact of the squabbles, feuds, pranks and jokes. I realize that we did not set a good precedent. The time for those shenanigans was over years ago.

WE are growing in numbers. As Heathens, we are now into our third and in some cases fourth generation. Though we are perhaps the most individualistic religion, more and more Heathens are starting to look at the wider community. While most of society is focused on ME, more and more Heathens are considering the good of US.

My part in this is to write and teach.

What can you do? Most likely, you are already doing it. When you live responsibly, you do more than the teachers and elders and leaders. Among the many benefits of living responsibly, you set a powerful example for young and new Heathens. Most likely, you do not even realize you are doing it. Whether you go to a gathering, run a website, post on a forum or meet with a kindred, you are sending a strong message. Responsible people are persons of substance. It shows in everything they do.

There is room for teachers and writers and others. However, the real work of carrying the Tradition is done by the good folks. Their example is the most powerful teacher of all.

Keep up the good work!
