Money and Value

The Fehu Rune deals in value much as we deal with money. We might say that Fehu is the essence or substance that is symbolized by money.

Money in itself is a good thing. It provides a means of exchange and a manner of assessing value. We should all have more money. Money is good. Money is not the root of all evil. The love of money is not the root of all evil. The only time money causes trouble is when one focuses on it so single-mindedly that he loses sight of anything else. It is much like an interesting saying: “When you focus on one truth to the exclusion of all others, that truth becomes a lie and you become a fanatic.”

Money is not everything. There are things it can neither buy nor assess. Money cannot buy true love. It cannot buy the most sincere kind of friend. Money cannot buy an exemption from death when your time comes. You cannot measure a good day in monetary terms. You cannot measure joy, courage, fidelity or integrity in dollars and cents. This does not mean that money is opposed to virtue. It only means that money is a different commodity.

Much of what we value in life cannot be measured. Our skills, aptitudes, and relationships are not things that can be evaluated by tabulation. They are valuable, indeed. They may be the most valuable things a person has. Nonetheless, that value cannot be rendered into dollars and cents.

A good exercise is to consider the things in your life whose value cannot be calculated by numbers. How do you value them? How do you express the degree to which you value them? Which are more important? Rarely do people re-assess their own thinking about the most important aspects of their lives. It is a good idea to re-examine the things you value. In doing so, you may uncover a few surprises about yourself. A little extra self-knowledge is an asset.
