Feeling the Raido Rune
This week we look at the Raido Rune. Raido can be called the “Riding Rune” and the “Wheel Rune”. Another name for Raido is Rad, the German term for wheel. In the old Norse lore, the Gods were said to ride in “carts.” (These were sometimes mis-translated as chariots.) Here are some exercises to help you to better understand Raido:
Exercise 1: Ride in a wheeled vehicle as a passenger. A train or bus are preferable, but a car will do provided you do NOT sit in the front seat. Airplanes are not as good. as they rely on wings rather than wheels. Think of yourself as cargo. Relax, knowing the vehicle is being driven. All you are doing is riding. This is part of the experience of the Raido Rune.
Exercise 2: Go to a center of transportation, such as a bus terminal or train station. If possible, find a station which connects two or more types of transportation: trains, subways, trolleys or light rail, buses, taxis. It is even better if it combines both shipping and passenger services. The best time to go is during rush hour. Pay attention as people flow from one form of transport to the other, and how people embark and disembark as each bus and train comes in. Get a feel for the flow of the place, and how the action ebbs and rises. This is a great way to get a feel for Raido.
Substitute Exercises: Go to a place of distribution, such as a large post office or shipping center. it can help if use the occasion to send a package or even a letter. Notice details such as postal boxes. You are trying to get the feeling of movement and transportation and sending large quantities.
If you should ever have to distribute flyers or pamphlets, this is a very Raido activity. (It can also have an element of Hagal).
Another Raido experience is making a delivery. Any time you deliver an item, you are acting as an expression of Raido.
(Remember – delivering is not the same as giving. Delivery is just another form of transporting. It is the place of the messenger and carrier. Giving is another thing altogether.)
