Politeness
Good manners tend to bring out the best in people. Even folks who seem crude or rough respond better to courtesy. One need not have the kind of manners expected when visiting Buckingham Palace. The simple manners taught at childhood suffice at home and abroad. Even a simple “please” and “thank you” goes over well.
Why does politeness work? The simple little courtesies send a clear message. They tell the other fellow that you respect him as an individual. His natural instinct is to respond in kind. This is how a simple courtesy helps things run smoothly.
There are different kinds of courtesy. On one hand is the more formal sort of courtesy. The other is the informal, almost casual kind of good manners. Yet whether it is “Thank you, sir,” or “ Appreciate it, pal,” the message is loud and clear. An expression of courtesy makes a person feel respected. It turns even the most bland transactions into friendly ones.
