Every Step Counts

A man asked a wise man, “How do I get to the holy mountain?”

The wise man replied, “Make your every step take you in that direction.”

This seems like a silly thing, but it illustrates a very real truth. To achieve a goal, everything must be aimed in that direction. In effect, attainment requires that everything works toward the goal. It also demands that you do nothing that works against it.

A good example is the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. The Japanese enjoyed tremendous success, even though they were overwhelmingly outnumbered by the Chinese. The Japanese were unified in their purpose, from the lowliest private to the Prime Minister. The goal was success for Japan. Personal agendas were set aside so that the greater goal could be achieved. The Japanese ran a “clean” operation, free from corruption. Their sense of purpose and unified front made them formidable.

China was not so fortunate. Its rulers were at cross purposes, placing personal agendas ahead of everything else. The worst of the lot was the big chief, Chiang Kai Shek. He was notoriously corrupt. Many an opportunity to repel the Japanese was lost because Chiang was too busy playing politics and feeding his greed.

Japan made everything work toward victory. China let other things get in the way of success.

Success means doing what need to be done. It also requires that you do not do things which run counter to your success. In other words, make everything work for you, and do not sabotage yourself. Make your success your top priority. Only then can you be assured of achieving your goal.

Make your every step take you in that direction
