What is Your Story?
Each of us has a special story. It is a story that speaks to you. In mythology, there might be more than one story that talks to you. The same is true of literature, legends, movies and music. There might be a novel, a simple tale or a song that seems like it is talking only to you.
There are stories that speak to you, and stories that tell you who you are. In the latter instance, it is as if the writer knew you and was telling your story. Has that ever happened for you?
In any life, there may be several stories that speak directly to someone.
One of the stories that spoke to me was the tale of Horatio at the Bridge. It is the story of a Roman warrior in ancient times who single-handedly defended a bridge against the enemy. Horatio fought until there was no need to defeat it any longer. At that point, he jumped into the river, calling on the River God as he fell. That impressed me: to hold on when hope was lost, leaving only when it was over. That was no ordinary exit, either!
There was a time many years ago when I was alone, injured, and had been overwhelmed with a series of troubles. There was no help. It was all on me, and I did not have much with which to work. I never gave up simply because I knew there was no alternative. Only afterward did I remember the story of Horatio. That told me that my situation was not unique. Others had also faced overwhelming odds alone. That did not solve my problems, but it made me feel better.
Stories have a power to help us, to heal us, to make us feel better. We do not think of them in those terms. If you look, you will find that the stories you love are the ones that speak to you deeply. It is something to consider. You may just find a few good things about yourself that you did not know!
