The Wisdom of Goldilocks

The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears is familiar to all of us. At each stage, the blonde-haired girl settles into the place that is “just right.” She will not settle for too much or too little . Too hard, too soft, too big, too small, too hot and too cold will not do. Everything has to be “just right.”

There is a wisdom to “just right.” Many times, just right works better than too much. A humorous example was a television show from the 1990s called “Tool Time.” In it, the main character would try to overkill a project by using equipment that was too powerful for the job. Too much can be as bad as too little. For instance, some folks go for the expensive, top of the line power tools intended for daily construction work, when they really need medium-duty tools for projects around the home. On the other hand, some buy the cheapest tools they can. The result is a lack of power to do the job. Of course, the greater risk is that the cheapest tools will break before the job is done.

It happens with cars. Look at the people who buy themselves heavy-duty pickup trucks, when all they need is a light or medium duty vehicle. All the extra springs and shocks do is make for an uncomfortable ride. How much truck do you need? Anything more costs more to buy and to maintain and refuel.

Even homes can be overkill. A home that is fine for a large family might be too much for a couple. There is the problem of washing all those windows, and the added costs of heating all those rooms. In the end it costs more to have too much.

The best choice is “just right.” Go for the things that fit your needs. Too much can be as bad as too little. Things are always better when it’s just right for you.
