The Needful Thing

One of the members of my toy soldier forum left today. He felt he could no longer participate in the hobby. He said that war toys conflicted with his spiritual beliefs. I would guess he had become involved in a pacifist belief. Apparently, it took him a while to come to the point where he could leave behind a hobby that he had enjoyed so much.

Many years ago, a friend’s young son insisted on wearing his galoshes, a back pack and a scuba mask to school. He wanted to play that he was some kind of deep sea diver, or maybe a space man. The other kids laughed at him. When asked why he did it, he said, “A man has to do what a man has to do.”

I wonder if that little boy knew the significance of his words.

Spirituality is like that. A man has to do what he must to satisfy his own spiritual choices. To each his own.

Even within Heathenism, there are differences in belief. It all boils down to one thing. Each of us must make his stand on his beliefs. He must connect with his spirituality. Nobody else can do that for him. This must be personal. We must do what we have to do. There is no other way to say it.

So it is that today’s story is an axiom of wisdom quoted by a seven year old boy.

“A man has to do what a man has to do.”

We can paraphrase that for the ladies: “A woman has to do what a woman has to do.”

It is all about doing that which is necessary. And so it is.
