What the Heck am I Doing Here?

What the Heck am I Doing Here?

It may seem like an old joke, but in the bad old days, it happened. Several of us would go out drinking, and drinking, and wake up the next morning in strange places. We ended up in places that we would not normally visit, and a few times they were places we normally liked to avoid. I would like to excuse it as being part and parcel of the 1970s, but our actions far exceeded the times. Think of Piltdown man out on a toot on New Years Eve. That was everyday life. In the bad old days, we gave the word “degenerate” new depths of meaning. Who else would think it normal to wake up in a strange place and say, “What the heck am I doing here?”

Thank the Gods I got away from that kind of living!

You do not have to be an urban wild man in a strange place to say, “What the heck am I doing here?” You can be in a place that is normal for you, among people who are not degenerate. Maybe you realize that you are in a place where you waste time and money, when you could be doing better things with your life. Maybe you look at your so-called friends, and realize that they are just a bunch of duds and freeloaders. Maybe you look at your situation and realize that you are totally dissatisfied with it. The usual response would be, “What the heck am I doing here?’

What the heck am I doing here?

If you have to ask that question, then it is time for a change. Something in your life is being unfulfilled. Something is being left undone. You are stuck in neutral among the dregs, the duds and the doldrums. When you find yourself saying, “What the heck am I doing here?” then it is high time to get away from there.

Let your dissatisfaction lead you to action. Discontent can be the catalyst to change for the better. It is up to you to take the initiative. When you find yourself saying “What the heck am I doing here,” you know it is time to take charge and make the change you need.
