Glory Daze
Some folks remember their past fondly, and some do not. Some want to relive their “glory days” and others feel that their best days are yet to come. Personally, I am convinced that I have yet to have the best times. As good as things get, there is always potential for even better.
People have different attitudes toward their school days. Some folks cannot wait until the next school reunion. They love to relive their school days and meet their old classmates. Other are ambivalent about it. They may go to a reunion once or twice, but see it as a vestige of a time long gone. Then there are those who do not think of it at all. They do not want to revisit those times nor the people.
Life moves forward, and most of us move with it. That forward momentum should be taking us to better things. Most often, it does. Most people feel that their adult years far surpass their high school days. It does not matter if their memories of school days are fond or not. Time means progress.
Sadly, there are those few who peak during their high school years. Life never seems to have the power or glory of their adolescent days. There is the school football hero who cannot match the gloss of his teen years. Another is the class beauty whose adult life never had the charm and allure of school days. There are other types, of course. What they all have in common is an eye fixed firmly on the past. For them, nothing will ever match their high school “glory days.”
What makes the difference? It is all a matter of perspective. Those who think their best days were in high school have chosen to think that way. The only reason they cannot appreciate the potential of the present and future is a matter of choice. Likewise, those who see the present and future as being the best times have done so by choice. They choose to see the potential for better.
Life offers us many opportunities. The only requirement is that we be open to them. If we choose to believe that our best days are over, we close the door to opportunity for better. On the other hand, of we choose to believe that there is more good to come, we open the door to more good. They choice is the individual’s. He has the final say as to whether he is a has-been before his time, or a good thing that is getting better.
Choose better and you will experience better. Only you can keep the door of opportunity open.
