Many and One
Fehu and Urus illustrate a unique paradox of the human condition: the society and the individual. Though the symbol of the herd and the lone wild ox. There is a great lesson. In a way, it mirrors the paradox of Mannar: the Roles and the Person. Mannar is the balance of Who a person is, as opposed to What he does.
In the “herd”, or greater society, the thing most notable is the What. Society as a whole is not so concerned with your being Karl, a nice guy. It focuses on Karl the Doctor, Karl the Lawyer or Karl the Indian Chief. It is in the individual sphere that the Who comes into play. It is the Who of you that makes you an independent person, not just another element of the crowd.
The paradox of Fehu and Urus asks questions.
“Where do I fit in?”
“Where do I stand apart?”
“When am I a member of a greater thing?”
“When am I unique?”
“Who are my people?”
“Who am I among my people?”
“What is my role in society?”
“Who am I?”
In this example, Fehu and Urus help to define the two facets of Mannar.
Just something to ponder….
